Playing

What age is Wordburrow for?

Children aged about 3 to 7, from first words through 3rd grade Dolch lists. Every word is read aloud, so a child who can't read yet can still play.

Is Wordburrow really free?

Yes. The whole game plays free in your browser, with no signup, no ads and no time limit. An iPhone app is in the works, and the web game stays free.

Does it read the words aloud?

Yes. Every word is spoken and a speaker button repeats it. The voice is a real recording, so it sounds the same on every device.

Why doesn't my child hear anything?

Check the device isn't muted, and tap the speaker button once: browsers only allow speech after a tap. On iPhone, the Silent switch can mute the browser voice too.

Why don't I see all fourteen games at once?

New mini games open up as your child's level rises, at most one new game per round, so a young child isn't overwhelmed. Four day-one games and four prize games are open from the start.

What happens when my child gets one wrong?

They lose a heart, and the game shows and says the right word, so the correct word is the last one they see.

Does it save progress?

Yes, on that device, in the browser's own storage. Clearing site data resets it. There's no account, so progress doesn't move between devices.

What devices does it work on?

Any modern browser: phones, tablets, Chromebooks and computers.

Words

Which word lists are included?

The Dolch lists: 220 service words in five levels, plus 95 nouns. Fry lists aren't included yet.

Can I use my own words?

Yes, with the list maker. Up to 30 words, shared by link.

Can I practice just one word?

Yes. Every word has its own page, like said, with a game built around that word.

Teachers and privacy

Can teachers use Wordburrow in class?

Yes, and it's free for classroom use: no accounts, no ads, and it runs on Chromebooks, iPads and the board. You can also embed it on your class site.

Do you collect children's data?

No. There are no accounts, no ads and no third-party trackers. We count page visits without cookies. Read the privacy policy.

Can I print the worksheets for my class?

Yes, as many as you like. Worksheets are free for home and classroom use.

The app

Is there an app?

Not yet. We're building one for iPhone, and the app page says what we have planned. The web game stays free.

An app is on the way

We're building a Wordburrow app for iPhone. The plan is everything you can play here, plus offline play and a parent view of the words that have stuck. It isn't out yet. The whole game is free here in the meantime.
