What this list covers
The first grade list has more verbs and connecting words: could, every, know, once, walk, were. Several have silent letters or unusual spellings, and the look-alikes get closer, like them and then, were and where.
How to teach the first grade words
Know and walk carry silent letters. Cross them out in pencil on a flash card, and read the word again.
Only the last letter differs. Have your child run a finger to the end of the word before answering.
By now many children can write words too. Cover the word, write it, then check. Seed Sow and Burrow Door practice the same thing.
