How to choose

For Dolch list practice: pick something built around the list. A dedicated app does that, and so does our free game, with no install.

For a complete free program: Khan Academy Kids covers far more than sight words, and costs nothing.

If phonics is the priority: children need phonics as well as sight words. Teach Your Monster to Read is a one-time purchase built around it.

For a school list: check whether the app takes your own words. Wordburrow's list maker does, for free, with no account.

The cheapest way to decide: play free

The whole Wordburrow game runs in your browser. Try a round with your child tonight.

Questions

What is the best free sight word app?

It depends what you need. Khan Academy Kids is free with no ads or subscriptions and covers much more than sight words. For focused Dolch practice without installing anything, try our free web game.

Is there a Wordburrow app?

Not yet. The app page has what we're planning.

Apps or flash cards?

Both work. Paper is good for a quick check together, and games add the repetition. Our printables pair with any list.

An app is on the way

We're building a Wordburrow app for iPhone. The plan is everything you can play here, plus offline play and a parent view of the words that have stuck. It isn't out yet. The whole game is free here in the meantime.
